Home made bee and wasp trap

Wasp killed in trap I found this on pinterest i take no credit for but i ha to share with my girls
Wasp killed in trap
Wasps can be a pest, especially if you’re eating or drinking in the garden and the wasps want to join in.
You can make your own bee safe wasp trap without attracting and killing bees in the process.
Recycle plastic container. An empty plastci container makes an excellent wasp trap
Cut the top off to make a funnel
Cut the top off to make a funnel
Cut a plastic bottle and turn the funnel up-side-down so it fits inside the container.Make a funnel to allow wasps to enter
This makes easy access for wasps to enter the narrow hole yet difficult to escape.
Sweet and sour attractant attracts wasps but not bees
Sweet and sour attractant attracts wasps but not bees
Add a mixture of vinegar, sugar and salt. The wasps are attracted to the sweet and sour scent yet bees don’t seem to be attracted by this sour mixture whereas a honey mix would be a fatal attractant.
Keep the wasp trap out of the rain as it will quickly fill with rainwater.
The down-side of this wasp trap is it also attracts and traps beneficial insects such as lacewing and hoverflies which are a natural pest control of aphids.
For my garden plant identification website please see www.rightplants4me.co.uk It’s free to browse and has some of my time lapses. I hope you find it useful

An awesome pinterest find i had to share

On weeknight summer evenings, after a long day of work, sometimes my husband and I just sit outside with a glass of wine and some snacks instead of a full dinner.
I love dining al fresco, but hate spending the whole time shoo-ing away bugs from my food instead being in the moment.
I thought of using a washed terracotta pot as a cloche, not just because it’s functional, but also because it’s pretty. A simple piece of rope knotted through the bottom hole acts as a handle. And guess what? Terracotta will retain the head of a hot dish, or keep a cool dip from warming up and drying out. Double awesome.

This is really a project anyone can do, just be sure to wash your old pot really well and have fun with it! (bonus points for cool colored rope or a painted pot!)

How to make brown Sugar!!!

August 2, 2010
How to Make Brown Sugar
Now wait just a second.
Why did no one tell me how dang easy it is to make my own brown sugar?
I sorta blew my own mind this morning. It turns out that granulated sugar and molasses when combined with a bowl and fork (or mixer, if you’re feelin’ fancy) produces the freshest and fluffiest brown sugar. Man… that’s satisfying.
And! Bonus! You can make the brown sugar as dark and flavorful as you like by controlling the amount of molasses.
This is just too good… and I’m just dorky enough to freak out at this kind of thing.
How to Make Brown Sugar

How to Make Brown Sugar
Alright . Let’s put on out big, fat, brainiac caps. This is about to get tough. We’re mixing together two ingredients. In a bowl. With a fork… or a mixer. If you use a mixer, you’ll still need a fork. Don’t fight it.
How to Make Brown Sugar

How to Make Brown Sugar

1 cup granulated cane sugar
1 Tablespoon unsulfured molasses
In a medium sized bowl, mix together the sugar and molasses. It’s that easy. There’s a part in this process where the molasses is super gunky and clumpy. You’ll think to yourself: Joy, you were wrong… this is coming out all wrong. Don’t worry. keep mixing it all together. It will even itself out. Work it until completely incorporated and no big molasses globs remain. For dark brown sugar, add another tablespoon of molasses. Use as you would in your favorite cake and cookie recipes. Store in an airtight container or in a ziplock bag with the air pressed out. Dang that’s easy!

Home made air freshners.....pinterest fin had to share

You will need:
glass jars
fabric
ribbon
baking soda
Add a few drops of the scented oil to the baking soda. This is not an exact science but about 8-12 drops of oil per half cup of baking soda should be about right.
Mix it together and put it in the jar.
Cut a circle out of the fabric (I traced a bowl onto the fabric to get the circle).
Then use the ribbon to tie the fabric onto the top of the jar. That's it! Now you have a new super cute air freshener that looks and smells great!

Savers....a lot!!!

I love to go to Savers when we go to Tucson. I find things that I would never have thought to look for there... clothes...household items.....some weird toys my boys have to have which makes them as hapy as can be. So its a win , win kind of place.
I support the "Buy used and save the difference" motto..... I do a all around check when i buy clothes and I have never found anything I don't like there.

Don't ever be embrrasse to shop at a Thrift Store... its more hip to be "thrifty" then it is to spend all kinds of money on clothes that are either going to not fit or my kids will ruin in a good days play.

Homemade glue!

4856861552 6ebc85f116 Homemade Natural Glue
During their childhood, kids use a large amount of glue. Most of them are chemical mixtures with no ingredients listed on the packaging. You can only imagine what’s in there.
Preschoolers love pasting and collage, as well as tasting anything that comes close to their mouths. Besides the awful taste, shop bought glue might not be the perfect substance for their tummies. School kids have (hopefully) learned not to lick the glue, but having it on their skin and, occasionally, all over them, isn’t good either as we know that our skin absorbs anything that’s put on it. Try this old trick to prove it: rub a clove of garlic onto the soles of your feet and after a while you’ll feel the garlicky taste in your mouth!
Whether you would like to avoid a chance of your kids digesting chemical glues, make your house greener and as chemical free as possible or just want to avoid buying stuff and reducing wasteful packaging, the recipe above is a sure winner. There are many natural glue recipes around, but this one is the simplest to make with only 4 ingredients you most probably have on hand. I’ve tried it and it works, not only for paper, but also for gluing chunks of wood.

How to make non toxic homemade glue

  • For the ingredients needed, see the recipe on the photo above.
  • In a saucepan mix 1 cup of flour with 1/3 cup of sugar.
  • Add half of the water required and mix into a thick paste without clumps.
  • Pour in the rest of the water and combine till the paste is smooth.
  • Pour a teaspoon of vinegar and put on medium heat until the mixture starts to thicken.
  • Cool and transfer to jar or an airtight plastic container.
This glue will keep for a few days. Refrigerate to prolong the shelf life (the jar in my fridge is 6 months old).
Vinegar in this glue recipe acts as a mild natural preservative. You might use grapefruit seed extract or tee tree oil (5-10 drops) instead of vinegar to naturally preserve the glue. Stick with vinegar though if you have small kids – not only is this glue non toxic, but perfectly edible too!
This glue needs more time to dry, but when dried, the bond is really strong

How to clean your washing machine

Instructions on how to clean your washing machine

Step 1: Fill the washing machine up and pour in 2 cups of white vineagar

Step 2: Start the washing machine over again and let it run through a complete cycle.

When I drained my washing machine it still had some grime on it so I got a sponge out and scrubbed it down really well. I added straight white vinegar to my sponge and the grime came off pretty easily.

{Make sure to rinse thoroughly with water after scrubbing with the vinegar because you don't want the vinegar to mix with any of the bleach in the next step!}

Step 3: Fill washing machine up again and pour in 2 cups of bleach. {I only used about 1 cup} Let it soak for 1 hour.

Step 4: While the washer is soaking use a couple of Q-Tips and detail all the nooks and crannies of the washer

Step 5: Restart washing machine and let it run through a complete cycle.

I have to say I'm pretty happy with the results!

Now that I know how easy this is to do I'd recommend washing your washing machine at least once a year. It's the perfect thing to add to your spring cleaning list!

shiny toaster cleaner......via pinterest

Before I like to tell my frugal mamas about anything I have to test it out first.....So a searching I was on pinterest, when I came across the best idea ever...... how to clean the toaster.. I will tell you up front that i was embarrassed to post pictures of my toaster but i took one for the team... so here it goes!!!

So here is what my toaster looked like....gross I know!! This was when I hung my head in shame!!!

Here is what you will need to get started
*cream of tarter
* sponge
* a bowl with a little water
* and elbow grease

You just start scrubbing until all the gunk comes off you will feel so...so.... PROUD once you start to put that elbow grease to good use... Here is a side by side of the before and after.. left side with the cream of tarter and right side without the cleaning....

laundry

Laundry lways seems to be never ending in my home much like mny of you mamas out there ... I know!!!
During the spring i dont mind hanging a few towels or sheets in the mid morning to give them that Spring feel.
Now with the wind and the Summer around the bend... I won't even dare do it. I don't like to dry my clothes especially my darks because i want the black to last in the shirts especilly for my boys since my 7 year old gets my 9 year olds hand me downs.... in other words I dont want them to look like hand me downs.... So its in my DNA to create my "Chinese Laundry mat" so to speak I just hang them in my laundry with hangers leave them to hang dry 24 hours. The next day i pop them in the dryer for about 5 minutes then iron them.... I feel frugal doing this and as long as I feel frugal then its working :)

It's costing me much less in electricity and man does my laundry room smell good... :) thats always important to me!!

Home made all pupose cleaner... i live by this stuff

All-Purpose Cleaner"Antibacterial" cleaners and soaps have become all the rage, yet their active ingredients have been linked to thyroid damage, water pollution and the emergence of drug-resistant superbugs like MRSA. Instead, kill germs with an all-purpose vinegar solution: Combine nine parts water with one part white vinegar in a spray bottle.

For those extra germy messes, such as a countertop that's been exposed to raw meat, squirt straight white vinegar on the surface, and follow with a squirt of hydrogen peroxide to knock out those germs

Home made carpet cleaner

Carpet CleanerIt seems that there's always some spot that finds its way into our carpets. Try this remedy to remove them:

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray directly on stain, let sit for several minutes, and clean with a brush or sponge using warm soapy water. For heavy duty jobs, mix 1/4 cup each of salt, borax and vinegar. Rub paste into carpet and leave for a few hours. Vacuum, then clean as above

Homemade window cleaner

Window CleanerWe all have them and thus likely go through gallons of store-bought window cleaner each year. Make your own solution to save some pennies in 2011:

Combine ¼ cup vinegar, ½ teaspoon natural liquid soap and 2 cups water in a spray bottle and shake to blend. Spray on the glass, working in small sections so that the solution doesn't have time to dry before you're able to wipe it clean.

Scrub as needed with the rough side of a kitchen sponge, and squeegee off. Use a cotton cleaning cloth to dry off the blade of the squeegee between swipes and to wipe up any liquid that puddles at the bottom of the windows.

fruit and veggie wash

Fill a sink halfway with lukewarm water.

Add 1 cup of vinegar.

Mix.

Add your fruit. Don't over fill your sink with fruit.

Soak for about 10 minutes.

Rinse well.

The Result: Clean. Fruit.

And how did I know they were clean?

The water was dirty, and the apples had that white sheen left on them after the wax has dissolved off.

DYI WRINKLE RELEASE SPRAY

DYI WRINKLE RELEASE SPRAY

1/3 cup liquid fabric softener (homemade or otherwise)
1/3 cup white vinegar
1/3 cup water

Directions:
Mix your three ingredients and pour them into a spray bottle. Then take your wrinkled garment, place it on a hanger, spray generously on clothing then tug and pull item to smooth. Hang or lay flat to dry. If you are in a rush, toss it in the dryer for a few minutes after misting, and you’re good to go

Another homemade cleaner...via email

So here is the “recipe”:
Citrus Enzyme Cleaner
Things Needed:
2-liter Plastic Bottle
100 g (or about 1/2 cup) Brown Sugar
1 teaspoon yeast (optional, to speed up process)
1 liter Water
300 g (or about 2 cups) Lemon and/or Orange Scraps
Marking Pen

Pour the brown sugar into the 2-liter plastic bottle.

Cut the lemon and orange scraps (I only had lemons on hand) into pieces small enough to fit the mouth of the bottle. Put them in the bottle.

Add yeast. Add one liter of tap water into the bottle.
Tightly screw the cap so that no liquid falls out and dissolve the sugar by
shaking the bottle for about 30 seconds.
For the first couple of weeks, give the bottle a shake once a day, making sure to leave the bottle cap loosely fastened to avoid gas build-up (ie. Explosions!) from the fermentation process.
Using a marking pen, write the date on the bottle. It will take three months for the ingredients to ferment. (Or two weeks if you add the yeast.)

When the enzyme cleaner is ready…add half a cup of enzyme cleaner to one liter of water and mix thoroughly. (Use more if you prefer a stronger concentration.)

1) for dishes and laundry (use 1/4 cup of enzyme)
2) for washing bathrooms and toilets. grime comes off easily (1 part enzyme to 10 parts water)
3) for removing stubborn stains and odours (coloured fabrics and floors) (use undiluted)
4) to clean vegetables and fruits (1 part enzyme to 10 parts water)
5) clear blockages in kitchen sinks and drains (use concentrated or blended pulp/sludge of enzyme)
6) as a natural insect repellent (use undiluted) for ants, cockroaches.
7) for mopping floors (1 part enzyme to 20 parts water)
8) as fertilizer for plants (use 1 part enzyme to 20 parts water, or use the leftover mop water)
9) as a skincare product, e.g. facial cleanser or toner (1 part enzyme to 2 parts water)
10) wash cars – cars will look as if they have just been polished! (1 part enzyme to 20 parts water)

Homemade toilet bowl cleaner and all pupose clener

Here is what you’re going to need:
1 cup baking soda (cleans, deodorizes, softens water, scours)
1 cup white vinegar (cuts grease, removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax build-up)
spray bottle (optional)
toilet brush

Step 1: Turn the shutoff valve found under the toilet clockwise until it will no longer turn. The toilet’s water now is shut off.

Step 2: Flush the toilet and continue to flush, until the bowl no longer fills.

Step 3: Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda all around the inside of the bowl, then either SPRAY or POUR white distilled vinegar into the toilet. (There will be some bubbling reaction which is perfectly safe!) I prefer to SPRAY the vinegar, because then I can spray up under the rim. I like to use one of those heavy duty spray bottles sold near the cleaning supplies at the grocery store. They provide a strong spray stream.

Step 4: When the bubbling has subsided, scrub the toilet with a toilet brush. Leave the vinegar and baking soda in the toilet for a few hours or even overnight.
Step 5: Scrub the the toilet one more time. Turn the shutoff valve back on, and flush the toilet.

You have just cleaned your toilet bowl for PENNIES and without ANY chemicals.
I have also found that for tough STAINS…THE very best solution is a PUMICE STONE. Seriously, if you don’t have one, you need to get one.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
If you are looking for a good ALL PURPOSE SPRAY for the outside of the toilet…I found this one on AmyBayliss.com that I’m definitely going to make up. Sounds like a good one.
Ingredients (one bottle):

1/2 tsp of liquid castile soap (I would omit this tiny amount of castile soap after reading this article)
1 tsp Borax
1 tsp of washing soda
1/2 cup white vinegar
2 cups hot water
25-30 drops of essential oil (Tea Tree, Grapefruit, or Eucalyptus would be good.)
24 oz spray bottle
Mix the castile soap, Borax, washing soda, and vinegar in a large bowl or measuring cup. Slowly add the water and stir. Allow it to cool and then add some essential oils. Using a funnel pour it into the spray bottle

No slip hanger....via pinterest... had to share

This is BRILLIENT.... because i always have this problem.. half the time I find my shirts in the bottem of my closet and it makes me go grrrrrr A LOT!!! So when i came across this not only did I have to do it myself I had to shre the wealth.

so its pretty simple.......all you need are hangers and fuzzies..aka pipe cleaners.

its literelly that easy!!!!

Jello fish bowls... LOVED DOING THIS

The hardest part about making the jello fishbowl is time. Jello takes time to set and you can’t assemble this all at one. We decided to use a large jar for the fish tank and I filled it with the jello. I placed it in the fridge for an hour to cool down. Then we took it out and poured in the jelly beans to serve as rocks. It is critical that the jello is cooled by this point or else the hot liquid would dissolve the candy coating of the beans. Then I placed the jar back in the fridge for another three hours before inserting the Swedish fish with toothpicks. The jello was nearly fully set, but not quite. I found that placing the fish on the tips of toothpicks and pushing them down into the jello worked best. Longer skewers could be used as well.
We then placed the jello back in the fridge to finish setting and it was all good after a final two hours. After that I took some pictures, invited some friends over and let the kids devour the entire thing.
